Burkey Family Restaurant, near Hara Arena

I'm fairly decent at making eggs, french toast, pancakes and such, so I normally eat breakfast at home.  However, sometimes I just feel like having somebody else make it for me, so we went out for breakfast.  We decided to give Burkey Family Restaurant our business this morning.  As you might guess from the name, this is not a chain.

Just about the first thing you'll see when you go in the door are the pies and cakes.  They have lots of them behind glass there, tempting you.  I resisted this time, because I'm trying to lose a little weight.

Interior is clean, and there was no background music playing.  Bathrooms were decent.  While we were there, there were perhaps 4 other tables occupied in the late morning.

Although I almost picked one of the breakfast specials, such as the breakfast burrito for $4.75, or "Elmo's Mess" just because of the funny name, I decided to try "Rob's Deluxe" because it offered a variety for $7.95.  Specifically, it had choice of pancakes or French toast, choice of ham, bacon or sausage, home fries and two eggs.  I selected French toast and sausage.  Mrs. Dayton Dining picked the cheddar cheese, broccoli & bacon open face omelette with toast for $5, plus a coffee.  She said that the omelette had a lot of cheese, and the bacon gave it excellent flavor.  She also said that the coffee was good.

Food arrived after about a 10 minute wait.  My French toast was a bit thicker than I'm used to.  I believe this was because they used something along the lines of Texas Toast to make it.  There was nothing wrong with it, it just wasn't exactly what I'm used to when I do it at home.  The sausage patties were seasoned well, and had a good sage taste.  The home fries were pretty much potatoes sliced like quadruple thick potato chips.  They were fine, but a bit dry.  I think I would have enjoyed some garlic butter or olive oil drizzled over them, along with some spices such as mild curry.  I had the 2 eggs over easy, and used some of the home fries to mop up the runny centers.

They also have an all you can eat Sunday Brunch, from 8a to 1p, for $7.95.

Free $20 Domino's Pizza gift certificate!

I view this hands down as the single best food deal I've gotten in the mail in the past year.  I recently got this postcard in the mail:

Yep, an insurance company in Englewood, Boord-Henne Insurance, mailed these out, advertising $20 in free Domino's Pizza to anyone who sends in their current house insurance policy.  You don't have to buy anything - just call them with the details about your policy, fax it in, or send it as an email attachment.  I went with the latter option - scanned our annual house insurance statement and sent it as a jpeg file attachment.

Within a day, I had an offer to provide about 50% more coverage on the house for roughly the same price.  That wasn't quite what I was looking for, so I ended up with a more customized quote offering me about 14% in savings over my current policy. (~19% with an Ohio Farm Bureau Membership discount)

Like I said, you don't have to buy anything.  It took me a bit longer to get in to pick up my $20 gift certificate, and so this ended up surprising me in the mail yesterday:

Obviously, I've covered up the certificate #, and added the "Sample" captions, but this lets you see exactly what you will get for your time.  I probably spent a grand total of 5 minutes scanning in the insurance page, then sending off the email to steve@boordhenne.com.  I can't guarantee that you will have yours mailed to you, but they did that with mine without me asking them.

Note that these are only valid at Dayton area locations.

Of course, in addition to the free pizza, you may very well realize significant savings on your house insurance.  I was able to achieve 14% savings, WITHOUT the automobile discount, compared to another company that was supposedly giving me a discount for having my car insurance with them as well.

How many pizzas could you buy over a decade saving that kind of money?  For me, the answer is 96.  Yep, taking advantage of the free gift certificate and switching over the insurance will net me the equivalent of almost 100 free pizzas over the next 10 years!

If you take advantage of this, or end up saving a boatload on your insurance, please do me a big favor and click on one of the ads over on the right side of the page to say thanks.  I'd also love to hear back from you, so feel free to leave some comments!
